How to Plot & Represent Fractions on a Number Line
Fractions are easier to understand when visualized as distances along a line rather than slice diagrams of pizzas. Learn how to divide intervals, plot proper fractions like $3/4$, and represent improper fractions with precision.

How to Show Any Fraction on a Number Line
Step 1: Identify Whole Number Bounds
Determine which two whole numbers the fraction lies between. Proper fractions (where numerator < denominator, like $\frac34$) always sit between $0$ and $1$.
Step 2: Divide Interval by the Denominator
Look at the denominator (bottom number). Divide the segment between your whole numbers into that exact number of equal sub-intervals. (e.g. For $\frac34$, make 4 equal parts).
Step 3: Count Forward by the Numerator
Start at the lower whole number and count forward tick-by-tick according to the numerator (top number). For $\frac34$, count 3 tick marks past 0.
Step 4: Plot and Label the Point
Place a prominent dot on that exact tick mark and write the fraction label above or below it.
